Some background on the Heemparks by Leo den Dulk:

When the population growth of the western provinces of the Netherlands increased dramatically by the end of the 19th century, naturalists started to worry about the diminishing natural landscape.

Soon conservationists and schoolteachers started to propagate ‘nature sport’. People were encouraged not only to enjoy the remaining natural scenery and the fresh air, but to actively study flora and fauna, discover new plants, animals and insects, so they would get a better idea of what nature actually is.

Half a century later the Heemparks, parks filled with indigenous plants and trees were created, just south of Amsterdam to attract new inhabitants. Close to four hundred species, some common, some (almost) extinct in Dutch nature were collected in carefully composed and maintained landscapes.

Over the years they have gained international fame and have inspired many now famous landscape designers. In a two-hour tour you will experience the wonderful scenery, get acquainted with some of its special plants and hear stories about its background.
